Endometriosis

The endometrium is the lining of the uterus and sometimes tissue similar to this lining is found growing elsewhere in the body.

Endometrium tissue responds to monthly hormonal changes in ways similar to uterine tissue. The condition of endometriosis can cause pain and infertility, but is treatable by medication or surgery. One of your physicians at The Veranda will be happy to help you decide what treatment option or combination would best fit your symptoms.

How does endometriosis occur?

Endometrial tissue may attach to organs in the pelvis. This endometrial tissue responds to monthly changes in hormones the same way the uterine tissue does. Just like the uterus, it breaks down and bleeds. The bleeding may cause pain, especially during your period, however the amount of pain does not indicate how severe the condition is. Other symptoms may be spotting or infertility. The breakdown and bleeding may also cause scar tissue, which can bind organs together and may cause even more pain. The cause of endometriosis is uncertain. It is most common in women who have never born children and in women in their 30’s and 40’s (but can occur at any age in a woman who menstruates).

How can endometriosis be treated?

Depending upon your symptoms, you may be treated with medication, surgery or both. Hormones are used to relieve pain and slow the growth of endometrial tissue. Medications cannot reduce adhesions or scar tissue. Surgery is an alternative treatment in which endometriosis and scar tissue are removed. The surgical option is often successful for treating both pain and infertility. However, about one-third of the women who have had surgery may need additional surgery within five years.
